Just wanted to add my thanks to the list. Your detailed and unpatronising cocktail worked perfectly. Seems unbelievable this hasn't this been sorted in an Ubuntu update by now - I only upgraded 2 days ago.

I have some issues with step 10 of your solution. I can't seem to be able to download (or ping) anything. I am on a wireless network, network-manager is running and ifconfig shows the wlan0 interface. Should the wi-fi be a problem?

I followed your steps, but when I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1, nothing happened. My process continues to let me use the computer as usual. I opened a terminal and followed all the commands in your article. IT did not work. I had already followed the subset starting with mv /var/run/* /run, with no avail. I am running on a HP Pavillion. As I cannot access the shell prompt during boot-up, do you think this prevents me from getting rid of the error? I noticed that the /var/run directory keeps coming back, even though I check to see that it is deleted before I reboot.
Thanks for any help!
